Maryland on the east coast of the United States is one of the smallest states in the entire country. It is also one of the oldest states, and one of those that played a very large role in the creation of the United States. In addition to many historically interesting cities, Maryland also has very beautiful nature, with both fantastic inland landscapes and an incomparable coastal strip.

Maryland is one of two states bordering the US capital, Washington DC. and many visitors in the state visit this city.

Things to do in Maryland

Ocean City
One of the most visited cities in Maryland is the stunning Ocean City, located on a peninsula on the state’s coastline. In Ocean City there is both sun, swimming, outdoor activities and shopping. Ocean City has long white beaches with fantastic bathing water, and if you fancy surfing, golfing or fishing, there are very good opportunities to do so in the city.

There are also a number of fine piers and smaller amusement parks in Ocean City. It is simply the perfect destination for those who want to make the most of their holiday.

Washington DC
Washington DC is the capital of the United States, and technically does not belong to a state, but is its own territory. However, the area is located inside Maryland, and it is one of the most popular destinations if you visit the state. There is an incredible amount to see and do in Washington DC. Here, history is ever-present, and with the many important and powerful buildings found in the city, there is something to discover around every corner.

Among other things, the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the United States Capitol are some of the most visited sights in the capital, but there are also several interesting museums, such as the Smithsonian, which includes several different types of museums.

Fort McHenry
If you want to experience the wings of history, a visit to Fort McHenry in Baltimore is a must. Fort Henry defended both the state and the United States on numerous occasions, including from the British Army. It was here that the basis of the US national anthem was written, and many important battles have taken place at Fort McHenry.

The fortress was built in the 18th century, and is shaped like a star. Today there are many nice exhibitions in the fortress, and it is a very exciting experience to discover the history surrounding both the national anthem and the many battles that took place there. Driving in Maryland is a very pleasant experience, and with a rental car it is easier to get to the different parts of the state and smaller towns. It is possible to pick up rental cars in all major cities, but it is best to rent the car online in advance, to ensure that the right car is available on arrival.

National parks and beaches

There are a large number of national parks in Maryland, and with its beautiful coastline, there are also several lovely beaches to visit if you are in the mood for sun and swimming.

There are many nice national parks in the state, including several historic national parks such as Antietam, Captain John Smith Chesapeake and Clara Barton. In these historic parks, in addition to beautiful nature, there are also pleasant exhibitions.

If you fancy hiking in the wild, a trip to one of the more scenic national parks is a must. For example, the wonderful Chesapeake Bay with its famous hiking trails can be found in Maryland, and Catoctin Mountain is one of the most visited parks in the state. In Catoctin Mountain there are breathtaking views and fantastic environments with the vast forests that just have to be experienced.

Maryland’s beautiful coastline offers several beautiful beaches with wonderful sand and bathing water. Some of the beaches considered to be the best in the state are Ocean City, Assateague, Sandy Point State Park and North Beach. On these beaches you can also surf, and the towns that house the beaches are very cozy and pleasant.
